The NMFTA (National Motor Freight Traffic Association) rolled out some important updates to their online catalog that impacts NMFC numbers, freight classifications, and the density scale used to assign freight class.
These changes took effect on July 19, 2025.
What’s Changing?
For commodities categorized primarily by density, the NMFTA adjusted its system as part of a larger effort to modernize and streamline freight classification. The aim is to create a more transparent, accurate, and efficient system for rating LTL (Less-Than-Truckload) freight.

If you’ve ever entered an NMFC code and wondered why an estimated freight class didn’t show up, that is because the freight class from the NMFC lookup overrides any density-based programming.
Pro tip: Use the class calculator for general estimates or when no NMFC is available, but default to a products NMFC code for the most accurate quoting.
